Luther on Leadership

Quoting Dr. Martin Luther:

I cannot guide myself, and yet would fain guide the world! Many a time I have made fine articles and rules, and brought them to our Lord God to guide Him. But the good God has let me see in the end how all my mastering has come to nothing.

Elizabeth Charles, Watchwords for the Warfare of Life. From Dr. Martin Luther (New York: M. W. Dodd, 1869) 156.

Rules! Why do we like 'em so much? A local congregation where I live is about to embark on a 40 day challenge to "fast from the world and feast on God."

I'm wondering, though. If it's good to do or don't do something for 40 days, then shouldn't we be doing or not doing that thing all the time? Why limit it to 40 days?

Maybe 40 days is enough to improve and augment Christ's completed work...

I feast on God too, every Sunday in the Divine Service, which is 52 days a year! I wonder how vocation fits into their 40 day fast/feast?
